DARN GOOD PIZZA!!!! Having lived in HB for 7 years I can truly say that St. George is hands down one of the best pizza joints around. For me, what really sets this place apart from all the other pizza places is the sauce. You can tell that they take their time to simmer the sauce and it's a great base for an awesome pizza. Also, you won't feel like you've eaten a tub-o-grease when you get food from St. George. The dough is nice and bready without being saturated with oil. If you're ever in HB and craving some good pizza, hit up this place. Oh, their wings aren't bad either.

It seems odd to give five stars to a hole in the wall, unassuming pizza place.   But they deserve 5 stars for making fresh pizza dough every morning, great tasting, piping hot pizza, and friendly and efficient service.  Definitely a gem off of Newland and Edinger.  We were a party of 7 and we will be back!

I love this place and now the new owners have made it perfect for eating in or taking out. It has a great ambiance and feels like a small pizza shop in New York and the food is amazing. I personally love The Greek!

The History of Pizza

The history of pizza has been, and is contentious, for we can never know which nation invented pizza, but pizza history is no less colorful for that fact. As we cannot know the date when the first pizza was invented ,we can only speculate who invented pizza.
Pizza, as we know it today, is a bread crust covered with a tomato base and then flavored with other toppings. Yet tomatoes did not appear on European menus until the Sixteenth Century, when they were brought over from the New World by the Spanish conquistadors. Pizza as we know it today, with a crust, tomato and other toppings, was even later in history; it did not originate until the eighteenth Century in Naples .
Italian folklore claims that the first pizza was Italian, and it is certain that in ancient times the ancient Greeks  had a type of unleavened bread, topped with a flavor before being baked. We know from historical writings that the Greek pizza was merely vegetables, but the origin of the pizza in Italy was more sophisticated. It was topped with pork scraps, olives and the sweet desserts with honey, raisins and pine nuts. Some of those sweet dessert pizza recipes have been enshrined in pizza history and are still used in Italy today.
